Meet Guest Alchemists, Delisa Myles & Earl Duque
I met Delisa and Earl through the tango community many years ago, and I’ve always been inspired by the way they follow their own creative flow both separately and together through dance, writing, photography, painting, baking, farming, and community-ing, just to name a few of their explorations. They are truly artists of life.
I’ve visited their current collaborative project, Delicious Earth Farm, in downtown Prescott, AZ, several times over the past few years. Once, I sorted a dozen varieties of tiny pepper seedlings for planting, pruned lavender branches, and harvested clematis and dahlia flowers for the farm stand. We took a break and ate slices of Earl’s freshly baked sourdough with local honey.
Another time, I rubbed hundreds of dried sunflower seeds from the faces of last year’s plants. We saved most of them, and planted a few dozen in the flower garden for the next growing season. Delisa sent me photos when they reached over ten feet tall. I remember staring at the image as though seeing sunflowers for the first time. It really does seem like a miracle when you’ve pushed the seed into the ground with your own hand only months before.
Even though I’m more of a writer than a farmer, these moments at the farm brought me a little closer to that miracle. I’m so thrilled that Delisa and Earl agreed to share some images of the alchemy they are working there. Enjoy!
